LCD and Plasma TVs – The Differences

by Miles Huffmann

There is a bit of confusion for many people when it comes to the differences between LCD and plasma TVs. Many people think that it is the same technology with a different name. They may also believe that a flat screen television or flat screen monitor is the same.

To further that misconception, you can factor in how the LCD and plasma flat screen televisions are different than the typical cathode-ray tv sets still found in many households. If you want to get really confusing, not every flat screen television or flat screen monitor is actually plasma or LCD. Confusing isn’t it?

The main difference between LCD and plasma TVs is what is put between the two pieces of glass that make up the picture. Plasma TVs have gas which produces the color and LCD uses liquid crystals.

The crystals filter the color whereas the gas charges the particles into phosphors. The phosphors are red, green and blue and come together into pixels which produce the picture.

So the question remains, between the two, which one is the best? When deciding it is inportant to note that plasma televisions will experience what is called “screen burn”, caused by a heat build up when the set is left on too long.

Computer monitors also experience this, but the use of a screen saver will prevent it form happening.

Yes, the information can be a little bit intimidating and you may not even care about the inner workings of the LCD and plasma TVs. But at least you will have the knowledge and be able to tell the difference. Whatever technology you decide you like better, you can now say you made an informed decision based on the information available.

If you have any other questions or still remain unclear on the difference, then you can always seek out a sales associate for more information. As well, you can go online to a plasma forum and find out what others have to say.
